Abstract

This thesis is expected to find out the causes and effects of anxiety and death instincts in literary works such as movie scripts. The story tells of a woman named Sawyer Valentini who has to be trapped in a hospital with her stalker, even then it makes her anxiety worse and causes her death instinct. The discussion in this thesis applies two approaches, they are intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The concept applied to the analysis through an intrinsic approach consists of characterizations using the methods of telling, showing, plot, and setting. The concepts used for the extrinsic approach are anxiety, death instincts, and hallucinations. In this study, the movie script “Unsane” is the primary source and is supported by several relevant theories, concepts, and definitions as a secondary source.The results of this research indicate that the anxiety experienced by the main character is not only because of the stalker, pressure from the hospital environment and hallucinations are the causes of the death instinct in the main character.Through the intrinsic approach, it can reveal the main character by using telling and showing method. Through the plot, we can see the conflicts faced by the main character. And through the settings, we can find out more details from the character to the plot.Based on the theory I am using, I conclude that the form of main character’s anxiety shown when she found out that she is being stalked by a man named David Strine. As a result of the anxiety makes her hallucinate and makes her death instinct arise causing her to act aggressively on others.
