Abstract

This paper analyze the theme of Marriage Story movie script using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Through the intrinsic approach applied concept: theme, characterizations, plot and setting. And through an extrinsic approach. Defence mechanism method with rationalization and projection are analyzed on Nicole’s character. The approach of the research that used in qualitative approach. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the result of the data analysed is in descriptive phenomenon such as words, sentence and language. The object of this research is Marriage Story by Noah Baumbach. The script tells us that Nicole and her husband divorced because of their affair. Nicole felt she was betrayed and decided to divorce her soon. Nicole felt that her husband was blaming her situation as she was under pressure from each other during her divorce. Features, plots, and settings describe where the location reflects the self-defence between Nicole and her husband. Nicole and her husband have elements of rationalization and projection that enhance the analysis of this film. The script depicts Nicole making her decision too soon. Nicole puts her feelings and her self-esteem first, so she is critical of her and realizes that her attitude is hurting her others and even herself. not. For this reason, this analysis is intended to show where the reflection of self-defence is in the main character of this script.
