Abstract

This study investigates gender performativity that breaks the norm of the social construction that exist in Disney’s Mulan (2020) movie script. there are two main objectives in this study. The first objective is to describe the reflections of the main character breaking gender roles through utterances spoken by other characters in Disney’s Mulan movie script. The second objective is to analyze the reflection of the main character when she breaks gender stereotypes shown in Disney’s Mulan movie script. This study used qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive method because it describes the reflection shown by the main character contains gender performativity spoken by characters in Disney’s Mulan movie script. The object of this study is Disney’s Mulan movie script. The research data re collected from the dialogue between characters in Disney’s Mulan movie script. The result of this study proven that the main character breaks both gender roles and gender stereotypes shown in characters utterances. There are 10 data classified as gender-role breaking, and the gender role-breaking is determined based on the utterances by the main character which reflect breaking the roles of genders according the constructed society that people set from time to time. There are 40 data classified as gender stereotypes-breaking, and gender stereotypes-breaking is determined based on the utterances by the main character which reflect the stereotypes people set as feminine and masculine. It can be concluded that the main character in Disney’s Mulan movie script breaks gender roles and gender stereotypes constructed by the society to create her identity as a woman.
