Abstract

This research aims to analyze the utterances of a movie script by using several theories of pragmatics. The theories of pragmatics are included context, definition of implicature, conventional and conversational implicature. The research approach is qualitative. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative in which the analysis results of “what” question has answered. The research object is Tall Girl (2019) movie script that it is written by Sam Wolfson. The research data is from the utterances by the characters in Tall Girl (2019) movie script. The result of this research is that the types of implicature found in this movie script after analyzing the utterances of the characters. Conventional implicature is found fifty two utterances by using the word “but” as an indication of the utterance. Whereas, conversational implicature is found fifty one total of the utterances by divided into flouting the maxim, namely twenty three flouting maxim of quantity, twenty one flouting maxim of relevance, and six flouting maxim of manner. Therefore, it is concluded that most of the characters in this movie script contains more conventional implicature than conversational implicature since the total numbers of utterance is occurred.
