Abstract

This research aims to examine the categories of emotions shown by the characters Benji and David in the movie script A Real Pain (2024), written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg. The study uses David Krech's theory of emotion classification as an extrinsic psychological approach. This approach divides emotions into basic and complex emotions. Furthermore, the emotional analysis is supported by an examination of intrinsic literary elements, including characterization, plot, and setting. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques. These techniques involved analyzing dialogues, character actions, and descriptive situations found in the movie script A Real Pain (2024). The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive analysis, with the intrinsic elements of the script being integrated with David Krech's psychological theory of emotions. The study's findings indicate that the characters Benji and David encounter a range of fundamental emotions, such as happiness, sadness, fear, and anger, along with more intricate feelings like guilt, shame, and love. These feelings appear and disappear over time as the story progresses. They often mix together, showing the characters' inner struggles, social problems, and mental growth. The results suggest that feelings in the script act as both personal emotional experiences and storytelling tools that help in character growth and story advancement. In short, the movie script A Real Pain (2024) shows feelings in a realistic and complicated way. This shows that David Krech's emotion classification theory is good and important for studying how emotions are shown in movie scripts. This is related to the study of how people think and feel.
