Abstract

This term paper is motivated by interpreting meanings of strategic speech spoken by any president potentially disrupted by subjective matters in which it can cause commotions in a country. This term paper works on the critical discourse analysis of President Joe Biden’s inauguration speech to reveal the implicit meanings based on more academical perspectives through descriptive qualitative research method. Van Dijk Critical Discourse Analysis is applied as the approach to frame the analyses. As revealed in the analyses, President Joe Biden places domestic issues as the first priority to restore instead of international issues with percentage ratio of 70%:30%. This term paper reveals that unity and domestic security and stability against of democracy issues are implicitly claimed as the priorities to be restored and to be maintained. Followed by the issues in justice, humanity, tolerance, and public trust, they are coming into his policies to be restored. His leadership style is considering humanistic approach. Furthermore, the characteristic of his language styles is more composed and businesslike in expressing utterances which is not too hyperbole unlike Barack Obama’s. President Joe Biden mostly applies repetition and alliteration as the figures of speech to emphasize his messages.
