Abstract

This research discusses a novel by Sophie Kinsella which tells the story of a woman named Fixie Farr who prioritizes other people's affairs more than her own and always feels that it is her responsibility to solve all the problems faced by others. This study discusses the theme of literary works using two approaches, namely intrinsically and extrinsically. The concepts that I used to analyze through the intrinsic approach include characterization by using showing and telling methods, plot, and setting. In the extrinsic approach, I use the theory of anxiety and inner conflict. The results of this study indicate that the character of Fixie Farr experiences symptoms of anxiety such as fear, doubt, and feeling uncomfortable when facing a situation or problem which makes her thinks that she has to solve it. And Fixie Farr's character also experiences an inner conflict which is seen when she has to make decisions and no one supports and understands her. The novel I Owe You One is the primary source in this thesis and is supported by related theories, concepts, and definitions as secondary sources.
