Abstract
This study aims to analyze several utterances in a movie script using several theories in pragmatics. The theories in pragmatics used to analyze the utterances are context, cooperative principle and violating maxim. This research uses qualitative approach. It is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method which focus on examining the written text of the movie script to identify instances where maxims are violated, context and the reasons. The research object in this study in The Gentlemen (2019) movie script by Guy Ritchie. The research uses three steps to analyze the data, those are: classifying the data based on the types of violation maxim, explaining the reasons of violating maxims said by the characters, concluding the research based on data findings. What happens the most in the movie script is violating maxim of quantity after that violating maxim of relation. The fewest are violation of quality and manner. the reasons for violating maxims are different for each violation.
