Abstract

This study examines code-switching in bilingual conversations using Gumperz's ideas as a guide. This study's foundation rests upon the considerably expanding utilization of mixed languages in daily communication within highly multilingual societies. This use powerfully reflects the social and cultural identity of its speakers. Code-switching, a frequently observed practice among bilingual speakers, is used extensively as an important communication tool and, furthermore, demonstrably reflects large social dynamics. The research method employed is a qualitative approach, whereby data is collected through observation as well as transcription of verbal interactions between bilingual speakers in multiple social contexts. Researchers conducted the analysis by identifying three types of code-switching, inter-sentential, intrasentential and tag switching, and examining their respective functions in communication. It is shown by the results that an important number of speakers frequently use inter-sentential switching to mark topic changes and express emotions, whereas a large proportion use intrasentential switching to show social closeness and group identity. Furthermore, the function of tag switching is to considerably reinforce messages and powerfully attract the attention of listeners. This study concludes that code-switching is not simply a linguistic phenomenon, but also a complex communication strategy reflecting many social as well as cultural dynamics. This study offers several new understandings into the ways in which bilingual speakers use language as a tool for constructing identity and social relationships, as well as suggesting the necessity of additional research to comprehend the social consequences of this practice within a more wide-ranging context.
