Abstract

This research aims to analyze the inner conflict of Ephraim Winslow using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach used is characterization, plot, and setting. While the extrinsic approach uses the concept of inner conflict. This research used qualitative approach in revealing data. The object of this research is The Lighthouse movie script written by Robert Eggers. The results of this research are as follow, the elaboration between characterization and inner conflict, the elaboration between plot and inner conflict, and the elaboration between setting and inner conflict. This movie script is about Ephraim Winslow (Young) serves a contract job as a “wickie” (lighthouse keeper) for month on an isolated island off of the coast, under the supervision of the island’s longtime keeper, Thomas Wake (Old). On that island strange moments happened to Winslow as a new lighthouse keeper and as Thomas Wake said to him that his last partner was going mad. This result of this research is the inner conflict experienced by the main character Ephraim Winslow based on the desire and anxiety to the lighthouse, and the strange moments in that island make he loses his sanity.
