Abstract

This study discusses the theme of a movie script using the intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approaches consider the concepts of characterization, setting and plot, while the extrinsic approaches apply the concept of trauma and the theory of defense mechanism that includes the concepts of repression, rationalization, and denial. As a qualitative research, the study employed an interpretative analysis of the data collected in the form of literary texts from the movie Fractured by Brad Anderson as a primary source and supported by other references related to relevant theories, concepts and definitions as a secondary source. The study found that trauma can create defense mechanism through the concepts of repression, rationalization, and denial as exposed in characterization, plot, and setting of the movie script. It finally concluded that the theme of Brad Anderson’s movie script Fractured is defense mechanism created by trauma.
